Our program is committed to a holistic review of all applications and equitable and inclusive interview process, to recruit a diverse group of residents who will mirror the population of patients they serve.
What are you looking for in potential residents?
The IM residency is interested in well-rounded candidates. There is not one specific criterion that makes a good resident. It takes a balance of medical knowledge, altruistic personality, professionalism and willingness to learn that creates a recipe for success at Lutheran General.
How do I find out if I am selected for an interview?
Our Program will send you an invitation via ERAS with all the details of the interview process.
How many PGY-1 positions do you have?
What is the best part of training at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital?
Many things, but the most important is the supportive atmosphere and the camaraderie among residents, teaching faculty, and program leadership. Residents are encouraged to take an active role in how the program is run.
Do residents participate in research?
Residents who are interested in research have a variety of resources. The Russell Research Institute located just outside the resident lounge offers services for residents who are planning research projects. We have dedicated research faculty Dr. Eli Ehrenpreis and Dr. Jacob Bitran, who supervise and mentor resident scholarly activities.
What fellowships are offered?
How many residents go into fellowships?
Typically, 40-50% of our graduating residents will choose a variety of Fellowships
Do residents get to participate in outside rotations or mission trips?
Residents are allowed to spend up to 4 weeks rotating at an outside institution of their choice. Typically this occurs in their second or third year of training. Recent merger with Atrium Health and Aurora Health has given our residents additional rotation opportunities within our network. Advocate Lutheran General Hospital has a long tradition of participation in international global health missions.
What board preparation resources are available for residents?
Each year, residents are provided stipends to be used for educational purposes. Commonly purchased items include MKSAP, NEJM Knowledge + subscriptions, and textbooks. Additionally, we provide an online medical library which also provides board prep books for review. There is an ongoing protected time for Board Review. UWorld Boards is provided at no cost to second year residents and a Board Review Course of their choice is provided at no cost to our third-year residents.
Where do residents typically live?
About half of the residents live in the city and half live locally in the surrounding suburbs.
Is moonlighting available at your program?
Yes, we provide moonlighting opportunities at our institution at a competitive rate; this is available for licensed PGY-3 residents.
