Hematology & Medical Oncology Fellowship

Mission statement

The Hematology/Oncology fellowship program strives to train expert clinical subspecialists in the field of hematology/oncology. Fellows are also trained in the design and conduct of clinical research and quality improvement projects. At all times during their training, fellows are expected to conduct themselves with the highest ethical standards and to display integrity, honesty, compassion, and respect to all members of the health care team, patients, and family members.

Program description

The fellowship program in Hematology and Medical Oncology is a three-year combined program designed to train clinical Hematologists and Oncologists. The curriculum is organized to provide increasing levels of responsibility with respect to patient care, procedural performance, and clinical research. Fellows experience one-on-one teaching in both inpatient and outpatient settings, exposing them to a wide variety of hematologic and oncologic problems and many benign hematologic diseases and coagulation disorders. Patients are discussed regularly in the format of prospective multispecialty tumor boards and clinics. Fellows are also exposed to a wide array of adjunctive disciplines such as radiation oncology, gynecologic oncology, bone marrow transplantation, CAR-T cell therapy, palliative care, pathology, blood banking, coagulation laboratory and genetics.

AIMs

  1. Provide a three-year combined training in hematology and medical oncology for board certified general internists leading to expertise in clinical hematology/oncology and in conducting clinical research and leading to board certification in Hematology and Medical Oncology.
  2. Graduate fellows who provide excellent patient care in the setting of private practice, hospital-based practice, and university or university-affiliated practice. Fellows should be prepared to enter future specialized training within the field.
  3. Fellows should be able to provide care to a diverse group of patients from different geographical and cultural backgrounds and be comfortable treating uninsured patients.
  4. Instill the professional and ethical standards that focus on compassionate patient care, patient safety and quality improvement, self-assessment and wellness, self-directed study and leadership skills.
