Program director

Dear Potential Applicant,

Thank you for visiting our website and your interest in the Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship program at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital. Our hospital is 623-bed clinical, academic and research facility and serves as the primary location for our fellowship program.

Our fellowship is a fully ACGME-accredited 36-month training program with a strong emphasis on clinical cardiology. In addition to the required rotations in the Cardiac Catheterization Lab, CICU, Consult Service, Echo/Stress Lab, CT/MR Imaging, Nuclear, the fellows have ample opportunity for elective rotations in their senior year to focus their knowledge and technical skills in their area of interest. Our large volume of invasive and non-invasive procedures allows for an expanded, specific exposure. In addition, fellows are provided with unique learning opportunities in areas such as: CV Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Cardio-Oncology, Lipidology, Valve/Structural clinic and a state-of-the-art Simulation Lab.

Although the main emphasis of the program is clinical cardiology, research is encouraged and supported by the Advocate Research Institute. Our trainees participate in self-initiated projects as well as multicenter trials and have authored abstracts, case reports, book chapters and have given oral presentations at regional and national meetings. They also actively participate in teaching medical residents and students.

Community outreach efforts are encouraged: our fellows volunteer at community clinics for the underserved monthly.

Most of our fellows have successfully joined sub-fellowships in Interventional Cardiology, EP, Imaging, Advanced Heart Failure at various university medical centers. Our rolling, 5-year ABMS board passing rate is 100%. In addition, many of our fellows pass their echocardiography and nuclear cardiology board exams prior to graduation.

One of the greatest strengths of our program is its warm and friendly environment. There is a very strong connection between faculty and training which provides for a positive learning experience.

Fellows have a strong sense of ownership in their program. Weekly meetings give them the opportunity to voice their concerns and make positive changes in the curriculum, rotation structure, and general program policies. Our fellows also participate in the yearly applicant interview process and selection of new fellows. This allows for a very strong sense of “family” and promotes well-being.

Diversity and equal opportunity are very strongly emphasized in our selection process as well as during the training of our fellows.

I hope you will find our website useful. If you have any further questions or need additional information, please do not hesitate to contact me.
