Teaching activities

Quality teaching is an integral part of any residency program. For the Advocate Christ Medical Center's Family Medicine Residency, our faculty and residents incorporate this education seamlessly into their residency life.

Inpatient service

  1. Teaching rounds
Family medicine residents learn a great deal at the patient bedside, during informal discussions with other residents, attending physicians and consultants, and through self-study. Morning report on the Family Medicine Inpatient Service encourages residents and students to develop their clinical acumen by critically evaluating cases and learning key "teaching points" from patients cared for by the service.
  2. Lectures
In addition to rounds, residents attend numerous didactic conferences. The Family Medicine Inpatient Service features a core curriculum of lectures given by specialists and family medicine attendings. Lecture topics focus on important knowledge and skills necessary for on-call residents, such as management of:
    • Chest pain
    • Hypoxia
    • Acute GI bleeds
    • Sepsis
    • Fluids and electrolytes

Conferences

Residents are excused from clinical duties to attend weekly Wednesday morning conferences at the Family Medicine Center. The curriculum includes:

  • Quiz-based learning sessions
  • Evidence-based medicine
  • Journal club
  • Resident grand rounds (scholarly and patient-centered)
  • Morbidity and mortality conferences
  • Patient safety forums
  • Family medicine faculty lectures
  • Specialty lectures from local and national experts
  • Practice management

Outpatient Continuity Clinic at the Family Medicine Center
Advocate Outpatient Center- Oak Lawn

Our outpatient experience provides each resident with their own patient panel. You will work closely with co- residents, faculty, clinical and ancillary staff, and of course a large and diverse patient population. During a routine patient visit, patients are greeted, “vitaled”, and escorted to their exam room. We provide an emphasis on inclusive, comprehensive care across the spectrum of life. Education of proper practice management, billing/coding, acute and chronic disease management, and outpatient procedures are provided during the patient visit; precepting with our faculty attendings. We utilize Epic as our EMR with resources such as Up To Date readily available to enhance both resident and faculty engagement and education.

Additional patient care experiences include:

  • Prenatal continuity patients
  • Procedural care (GYN, MSK, SKIN, POCUS, OMT)
  • Urgent care

Simulation training

The Simulation Program at Advocate Aurora Health was born out of the organization's high reliability journey and provides simulation-based experiential learning opportunities for all team members.
