Director, Maternal-Fetal Medicine

The division of maternal-fetal medicine administers a full spectrum of high-risk obstetric services in both the inpatient and outpatient setting:

  • Ultrasound: Comprehensive obstetric ultrasound, including 3D and 4D capability, fetal echocardiography, noninvasive genetic screening, invasive diagnosis and intrauterine fetal therapy options.
  • Antepartum Testing for fetal Well-Being: Nonstress test, biophysical profile, Doppler ultrasound of the fetal arterial and venous system.
  • High Risk Obstetric Patient Management: Consultation with Maternal Fetal Medicine and Pediatric Cardiology specialists and management of patients who have medical and obstetric problems. Preconception and genetic counseling. Coordination of multidisciplinary care with services such as neonatology, diabetic educators, and social services.

Through these services, the Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine offers comprehensive care of the mother and child. Illinois Masonic is a destination for maternal transport in the perinatal period and is designated a Level III facility (the state of Illinois's highest designation).

Residents principally rotate during their second and third years, working closely with the full-time maternal-fetal medicine physicians in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. Further high risk management experience is gained during the 4th year, as the Chief resident plays an integral role in the service. Outpatient resident experience draws directly from the spectrum of clinical services, particularly ultrasound, genetic testing and perinatal consultation. Inpatient experience centers around the dedicated antenatal unit, as well as surgical procedures including cerclage and invasive fetal therapy. Resident didactic experience is provided with journal clubs, one on one attending teaching conferences as well as essential lectures.

While third year medical student's actively participate in the rotation, there is also a fourth year elective available for more in depth experience and exposure.
