Curriculum

The Podiatric Medicine and Surgery (PM&S) Residency with added credential in Reconstructive Rearfoot and Ankle Surgery is approved through the Council on Podiatric Medical Education and the current status from the most recent site visit is full approval (next Site Visit scheduled for Spring 2023).

The PGY-1 year is primarily at Stroger Hospital of Cook County.  During this year, the resident is an integral member of a busy foot/ankle service. Residents are exposed to numerous surgical procedures in podiatric, orthopedic, and trauma surgery. There are additional rotations in Anesthesiology, Behavioral Sciences, Orthopedic Surgery, Pathology, and Radiology.

The PGY-2 & 3 years take place at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, a large community hospital that sponsors 10 other residency programs and 3 fellowship programs. PM&S residents rotate in Emergency Medicine, Infectious Diseases, Internal Medicine, Trauma Surgery, General Surgery and Rheumatology.

When on off-service rotations, residents function as any other resident of that service and take the same call as other residents on that service.

Trainees are also exposed to clinical and surgical cases at Advocate Trinity Hospital, and at the University of Illinois Medical Center at Chicago (UIC). PGY-3 residents also have one elective rotation month of their choosing. During the three years, residents are expected to actively participate in regional and national conferences, and to make contributions in scholarly activity.

Former and current residents
Former and current residents of the program walked away with the top 3 honors in the manuscript competition at the American College of Foot & Ankle Surgeons Annual Scientific Conference in 2018.
