Occupational therapy

Advocate’s licensed occupational therapists are equipped to work with patients of all ages, to improve or restore functional skills that have been disrupted by illness, injury, or aging. Our comprehensive inpatient and outpatient programs provide personal attention, a variety of therapies, and home support programs to help you regain your independence, sooner.

What sets us apart:

  • Clear objectives: You and your therapist will set goals during a detailed, individualized evaluation
  • Personal attention: One-to-one interventions to reduce inflammation, relieve pain and equip you for positive rehabilitation outcomes
  • Timely, engaged follow-up: Periodic reassessment, to ensure your recovery goals are being met and to make modifications if needed

If you have a referral from your doctor, call 800-3-ADVOCATE to find a therapist and schedule an appointment, or find a rehabilitation location online.

    • Amputations
    • Burns
    • Fractures, crush injuries and dislocations
    • Lacerations
  • Arthritis, including osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis (RA)
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Chronic or acute pain in the upper extremities
  • Deconditioning
  • Developmental problems, such as cerebral palsy and autism
  • Joint replacement
  • Lymphedema
  • Multiple sclerosis (MS) and other systemic conditions
  • Nerve compression, and surgical release
  • Pre- and post-operative rehabilitation from hand surgery
  • Stroke
  • Tendonitis, tendon repairs and transfer surgery

Supporting you

To help you meet or exceed your rehabilitation goals, our therapists take the time to understand your current condition and apply appropriately individualized treatment modalities, including:

  • Physical such as personalized exercise programs that emphasize regaining lost or reduced function
  • Neurological such as perceptual training, and use of adaptive equipment following a stroke
  • Musculoskeletal such as custom splinting to protect the affected joint(s) during the healing process

Our process

To meet with an occupational therapist for initial evaluation and treatment, you will need a doctor's prescription. Once you have been referred, your Advocate occupational therapist will:

  1. Conduct a thorough skills assessment to evaluate your current condition, your rehabilitation goals and any limitations
  2. Design a personalized occupational therapy plan that includes an exercise program
  3. Fit you with a customized splint, if needed, to help you regain function and prevent re-injury
  4. Work with family members to educate them about your injury and recovery, to help reinforce the work done in therapy and promote better outcomes
