Gastric balloon weight loss procedure

Gastric balloon is a nonsurgical, outpatient procedure that promotes weight loss by restricting food intake. Through endoscopy, a surgeon places a gastric balloon into the stomach, making the person feel fuller faster after a meal.

What is a gastric balloon?

This approach is a less invasive procedure than other bariatric surgeries. During the approximately 30-minute outpatient procedure, the person is under a mild sedation. The gastric balloon, which is made of silicone, is delivered by an endoscope (thin, flexible tube) inserted through the person’s mouth and into their stomach. The gastric balloon is filled with saline solution to partially fill the stomach, leaving less room for large amounts of food and drink.

The gastric balloon floats in the stomach for up to six months before removal. During this time, you'll work with a registered dietician to develop an effective weight loss plan that includes nutritious meal planning, portion control and mindful eating. You'll also work with an exercise physiologist who designs an effective fitness regimen that contributes to weight loss, cardiovascular endurance and muscle strength.

The gastric balloon is then removed through another outpatient endoscope procedure. Following removal, you'll continue the weight management coaching for another six months.
