Treatment of esophageal cancer depends on a variety of factors, including the type and stage of cancer, as well as your overall health and personal preferences. Our goal is keep you feeling well throughout treatment without major changes to your usual routine.
Surgery is the most common initial treatment for esophageal cancer. If the cancer is found at an early stage, physicians may use minimally invasive endoscopic techniques to remove cancerous tissue and lymph node without the need for major surgery.
If the cancer is more advanced, your surgeon may perform an esophagostomy, a surgical procedure that removes a portion of the esophagus and multiple lymph nodes. The remaining esophagus is reconnected to the stomach. A plastic tube or portion of the intestine may be used to reconstruct the esophagus.
Radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy may also be recommended to treat esophageal cancer after surgery, to ensure that all cancerous cells have been destroyed.
One of our experts can confirm a diagnosis, review your treatment plan and explore alternate options, if needed.
We help you live well. And we’re here for you in person and online.
