Insurance 101

It’s important to know details about your health insurance plan before seeking health care. Coverage – and what you pay – can vary greatly between care settings.

Often, visits with your primary care physician or immediate care are less expensive (and quicker) options than a trip to the emergency department. Visit your health insurance provider’s website to learn about your plan.

Know this before you go:

  • Copay: This is a flat fee you pay out of pocket for a covered service.
  • Deductible: This is what you pay out of pocket for covered services before your insurance kicks in to pay its share.
  • Out-of-pocket costs: These are expenses not reimbursed by insurance, such as copays and deductibles.

If you think you're experiencing a medical emergency, go to the emergency department or call 911 right away – regardless of your health insurance plan. Use our guide to know where to go based on your symptoms.
