Mission statement

The mission of the Advocate Christ Medical Center Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Residency Program with Reconstructive Rearfoot/Ankle (PMSR with RRA) is to train podiatric residents as health professionals. Residents will be involved in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of foot and ankle disorders by medical, physical and surgical means. The program provides for podiatric training in a multi-disciplinary setting in a large, Level 1 trauma center. Residents will gain experience working with and alongside other medical practitioners in providing total health care.

Program description

The residency program is designed to provide a diverse and intensive clinical and surgical experience in order to supplement the resident's previous podiatric medical experience. This podiatric surgical training program is part of a premier Level I trauma center at a major teaching facility. The responsibilities placed on the residents will be substantial and challenging. In addition, Advocate Children's Hospital is part of the institution and program. The diverse population offered by the Advocate Children's Hospital provides an excellent resource for more robust training. The PMSR program with RRA is accredited through the Council on Podiatric Medical Education (CPME). The residents will participate in rotations, including anesthesiology, emergency medicine, infectious disease, orthopedic surgery, pediatric orthopedics, general surgery, vascular surgery, internal medicine, family practice, pathology, plastic surgery, wound care, outpatient podiatry clinics, inpatient podiatry management, and foot and ankle surgery.

Mandatory rotations:

  • Anesthesiology: 1 week
  • Internal medicine: 2 weeks
  • Pathology: 1 week
  • Orthopedics: 17 to 35 weeks
  • General surgery: 1 week
  • Emergency medicine: 4 weeks
  • Physical medicine and rehab training: 1 week
  • Wound care: 4 weeks
  • Podiatric surgery: ongoing
  • Behavioral science/psychiatry: 1 week
  • Podiatric medicine: 17 weeks
  • Research training: 4 weeks
  • Infectious disease: 4 weeks
  • Pediatric orthopedics: 4 weeks
  • Family medicine: 2 weeks
  • Vascular surgery: 1 week

Base salaries:

  • PGY-1 $66,000.00
  • PGY-2 $68,250.00
  • PGY-3 $70,750.00

Vacation/PTO:

  • Annually allotted time for vacation

Academia:

  • Academics are held weekly consisting of a Boards and academic text review, journal study, and case review.
  • Cadaver or anatomy labs for residents are held monthly to continually improve hand skills, dissection technique, and experiment with different types of fixation and hardware.
  • Guest speakers from other specialties are invited into our weekly academic sessions.
  • Clinical labs are also incorporated into weekly academics to keep up on clinical skills, such as biomechanical exams and ultrasound workshops.

Research:

  • Residents have a plethora of research options and the autonomy to pursue a project of their interest. The extensive hospital resources and vast attending staff we work with provide residents with numerous research outlets to pursue.
  • Research grants are available through the hospital, and residents are encouraged to apply for research grants and scholarships through podiatric organizations.
  • Residents are strongly encouraged to present research projects and presentations at academic conferences.
