Advanced practice clinicians

Giving you more choices for care

More than ever before, people are receiving treatment from a variety of practitioners who are not physicians, including physician assistants, nurse practitioners and nurse midwives. Learn more about these advanced practice clinicians and how they contribute to Advocate Medical Group's outstanding care.

Physician assistants (PAs)

Physician assistants (PAs) are trained and licensed to practice medicine as delegated by and with the supervision of a physician. A "PA-C" title indicates certification.

PAs' duties can include:

  • Taking complete health histories
  • Performing physical exams
  • Ordering diagnostic tests
  • Prescribing most medications
  • Diagnosing and treating illnesses and injuries
  • Providing patient education and preventive health care counseling
  • More extensive procedures that fall within their specialties, such as a mole removal in dermatology.

Nurse practitioners (NPs)

Nurse practitioners (NPs) are professional registered nurses with additional nursing education and advanced training in specialty areas. NPs deliver high-quality, primary health care to people of all ages. They confer with physicians and others when necessary.

NPs' duties can include:

  • Performing physical examinations
  • Ordering and interpreting laboratory tests and X-rays
  • Diagnosing and managing acute illnesses and injuries and stable chronic diseases
  • Prescribing medications

Nurse midwives

Nurse midwives are advanced practice registered nurses who have specialized education and training in midwifery. They care for women during prenatal visits, attend births and provide postpartum treatment.
